CharterHouse does not include any BACKUP.EXE or RESTORE.EXE because these depend on DOS version. Running the wrong BACKUP / RESTORE for your version of DOS causes an error "INCORRECT DOS VERSION".
The NOT cost-free choice: CharterHouse sells a backup utility that can be installed and run from the Master Menu. Order "Zip Backup". You also have these cost-free choices:
Finally; We do not guarantee that BACKUP and RESTORE will run from our menus, but if these programs exist in the CharterHouse directory they will be attempted. However, if you have problems that you think we can assist with, please describe exactly WBTH/WGTFTH TM and when. FAX that information along with a description of the troubleshooting steps you took and we will see if we can make it work for you.
CAVEAT: Even if these programs do run, they will not back up a file that is open, so you must keep your eyes open for any message that indicates such a problem. Top of Page
In brief: we set the computer to "dual" boot - either to DOS or to '95/98 - from a menu set up in C:\CONFIG.SYS. Microsoft documents boot menus in both DOS and Win 9x publications; please refer to that if necessary. The boot menu lets you select from 2 (or more) options when the computer first starts and allows you to select whether to start Windows or not. This is often needed because, when you exit Windows, your computer can no longer "see" the network.
To the extent possible, we present this as a "cookbook", but be aware that your Network Interface Card ("NIC") requires that the program specific to it be loaded and that program's name is based on the brand name and model of the NIC. Also, the first network drive letter is often `F' but it does not have to be. And we expect you to be able to run DOS EDIT.
Get to a DOS prompt (how you do this is up to you). Text inside `QUOTES' is the text of the file; do not type the quotes. Text in CAPS - but not enclosed by quotes - is to be typed.
C:
CD\
ATTRIB -H -R -S MSDOS.SYS
EDIT MSDOS.SYS
Change the line `BootGUI=1' to `BootGUI=0' (change the one to a zero) then save the file and exit EDIT.
EDIT CONFIG.SYS
These lines must be at the start of CONFIG.SYS:
`[MENU]'
`MENUITEM=DOS'
`MENUITEM=WIN95'
Optional: If you wish to normally boot to Windows, make this the next line:
`MENUDEFAULT=WIN95'. Otherwise use: `MENUDEFAULT=DOS'.
If you wish, you can add a timeout value (in seconds) by appending a comma and the number of seconds to wait for a keystroke to the end of the MENUDEFAULT line:
`MENUDEFAULT=DOS,6'.
`[DOS]'
`DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:ON'
`DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS'
`DOS=HIGH,UMB'
`FILES=99'
The first network drive letter will be one higher than what you enter for LASTDRIVE. To make F the network, set it to E.
`LASTDRIVE=E'
`STACKS=0,0'
`[WIN95]'
`DOS=HIGH'
`FILES=99'
(Other lines may follow if needed.) Save the file and exit EDIT.
EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT
The first 14 lines should be:
`@ECHO OFF'
`PROMPT $p$g'
`GOTO %CONFIG%'
`:DOS'
`CD\NETWORK'
`LH LSL.COM'
Substitute the correct program name for your NIC in the next line.
`LH CARD-RUN.COM'
`LH IPXODI.COM /D' (`/A' may work and saves memory)
`LH NETX.EXE' (EMSNETX.EXE saves memory but requires EMS)
`CD\'
`F:'
Substitute your server's name and your login name in the next line.
`LOGIN SERVER/LOGNAME'
`GOTO END'
`:WIN95'
Your original file should be here.
The final 2 lines should be:
`WIN'
`:END'
Save the file and exit EDIT.
MD NETWORK
CD\NETWORK
Copy these files from your NIC floppy (or CD) into this directory:
LSL.COM
The "CARD-RUN.COM" for your NIC
IPXODI.COM
NETX.EXE
EMSNETX.EXE (if available)
NET.CFG
Do NOT load VLMs! Please! (We will not provide technical support if you do.)
Contact the manufacturer of the NIC if you need assistance with the information in NET.CFG regarding such things as PROTOCOLs, FRAMEs and INTs. Often a configuration program can be run that will edit this file for you,or at least tell you what needs to be in it.
Reboot the computer. Test and correct problems until each of the menu selections works without any errors, then save a copy of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT so that when Windows 9x alters CONFIG.SYS, you can easily restore a working version. You should LOGIN without problems no matter which menu selection you pick. Top of Page
Start the program from the shortcut you just created. Install the rest of the (new) v3.20 modules from Master Menu F2 #10 INSTALL. Go to John's web site. With an empty disk in A drive, click on each of PKZIP.EXE PKUNZIP.EXE. BACKUP.EXE and RESTORE.EXE, saving these files to the floppy diskette. While you still have it in the correct computer's A drive, copy the floppy you just created into the C:\CHARTER directory (START, PROGRAMS, MS-DOS PROMPT, CD\CHARTER, COPY A:*.EXE); say N to "OVERWRITE?".
Take the floppy from the new computer to the old computer. Go to the CHARTER directory there and COPY A:*.EXE but this time answer either
Y or A to the "OVERWRITE?". Again, DEMO is an example; otherwise type EXACTLY what is on the next 2 lines:
CD DEMO
..\PKZIP -&w A:CHZIP.ZIP *.*
You must type the periods. Be sure "-&w" is "HYPHEN AMPERSAND lower-case W"; AMPERSAND is the SHIFTed 7 key. You can use
the diskette you already have in the A drive if you don't care about saving BACKUP, RESTORE and PKZIP. Feed it as many disks as it wants. When
PKZIP finishes, type:
CD..
COPY MCFILE.MM A:
Take the floppies you just created to the new computer. Open a DOS prompt and go to the C:\CHARTER directory (START, PROGRAMS, MS-DOS
PROMPT, CD\CHARTER). Insert the last disk, leave it in:
COPY A:MCFILE.MM
("OVERWRITE?" answer is Y)
EXIT
Start from the icon again, go to Master Menu and hit <F2> #5. Make all 9 letters in the NETWORK DEVICE MAP correct for your
setup and all the same; hit <F1> then <Esc>. Hit <F2> #3 and make all the FILE LOCATIONS 1 (one);
hit <F1> then <Esc>. Hit <F2> #2 to select your company. Use <F2> #9 to RESTORE
HARD DISK DATA for ALL APPLICATIONS from A to C for DEMO. The correct first floppy is in A now, don't change
until the PKUNZIP program says to. When the restore completes and you are back to Master Menu:
Z
MMINIALL
That's it. You're ready to run on the new computer. Top of Page
You are either logged into the network twice or you are logged into CharterHouse twice. Or the system thinks you are.
One reason the system might think you're logged in twice when you really are not is that, if you lose your network connection - even if only for a fraction of a second - then Windows will reconnect you. That's logged in twice.
Although it may seem ridiculous, Windows can cause the same situation even if your computer is standalone. That is because Windows is multitasking and, as part of that, it treats each program it runs as a separate user in the same way as a network does. In other words, Windows is its own network.
Another reason is that you got a USER joeblow ALREADY LOGGED ON TO CHARTERHOUSE. No matter whether you hit <Enter> or <Esc>, you're logged in twice. You must close CharterHouse entirely, restart until you no longer get that message, and only then can you safely proceed. In other words, if you had one instance of CharterHouse open, and inadvertently started another so you got this message, then you must say NO to the second instance and close the first, then restart. I call this "ENTER ENTER ESCAPE ESCAPE" because those are the keystrokes you use when you are certain you really are not already in CharterHouse.
The only solution to MULTIPLE NETWORK NAME is to reboot. You can't just close CharterHouse, you must also SHUT DOWN your computer - power off and then back on. Well, if you run Windows, sometimes it is sufficient to just START, SHUT DOWN, RESTART THE COMPUTER. But usually you must START, SHUT DOWN, SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER and then switch off. Top of Page
